I checked out the photos by Eugene Atget and I really did love them, especially this one to the left. I like how the water reflects on the bars (I've been taking photos with bars and metal in them and contrasting them with a pretty flower in the background) My eye sort of follows the bridge all the way to the building in the end, plus it is just a beautiful photograph.

Also, I developed some negatives on Friday. It was a lot easier this time around and I am excited to see how they come out on my contact sheet. I am just finishing up my last role of film and can't wait to see that either.

a picture from Paris

I took this picture in Paris last fall. I took it on a whim and it ended up being one of my favorite photos, I especially like the effect of the sidewalk going into the distance and the old man walking along in the middle. I like to think of it as sort of sad and serene.
Paris is a place that really inspires me and I like to flip through my pictures whenever I need that little bit of inspiration in life. I hope to go back one day.

Gallery Event

Thursday I attended the gallery event in Cushing-Martin with work by Ri Anderson, Thomas Gustainis, and Amy Montali. I really liked all of the photos. The colored ones were so eye catching and the black and white photos seemed so mysterious.


It was interesting listening to the artists talk about their work since I have never really been to an event like that before. Ri Anderson said he was very specific about the way he shot his photos. He wanted to be in complete control and everything was planned out in advance. Amy Montali on the otherhand did things very spontaneously. One picture of hers that I specifically liked was a picture of a woman handing a radish to an older man. Amy talked specifically about this photo, comparing her style of picture taking to balloon animals- this was her giraffe balloon animal. Pretty cool. She said she is very interested in fertility and the way she shot the radish photo was from an angle that emphasized the womans curves.


She has a background in film which is why her pictures look like they are part of a larger story. They seem like snapshots taken out of a movie. The models are people she knows but she is not attempting to reveal anything about their lives. Since she is friends with her models it is a very social process for her which I also found really interesting.


Again, Ri had a very different approach and his shoots were very formal. He knows the models he shoots also, some better than others. Everything he shoots is deliberate but made to look spontaneous. He explained that one simple hand gesture can mean terror or pleasure, with no other information given except that body part.


I really enjoyed these photos and the insight into them, I look forward to more events in the future.

some random things

I took this picture in Italy when I studied abroad there last Fall. It's one of my favorites. I lived in Florence but this was taken in San Gimignano when I visited there one day with my good friend Amy. It was such a calm and peaceful little place.

This picture to the left was taken this summer at the Cape. It is a picture of one of my older brothers. Michael, and my cousin's children Abby and Jack (5 and 3 years old). They are the cutest most adorable children ever and this was a really fun day so that's why I'm posting it, because it reminds me of good things.

This other picture to the right is a picture of my grandparents before they were married. I love old photos and I love them. I have a bunch more old photos on my computer that I might put up sometime.
